Alternative Rinjani trekking program

To Kanji or Dendaun
There are several unique mountains around the village of Sembalun; Kanji and Dendaun are just two of them. The flexibility of this program allows a one day or overnight soft trek. We will begin trekking after breakfast at around 07.30am or 08.00am. The trek takes us through superb scenery close to Sembalun before we break for lunch. During the trek we will see many different kinds of wild flowers and large numbers of cows. These locally owned cows live near Kanji and Dendaun, and if you are lucky our guide will teach you the traditional method of cow calling! You will also be taken to search for the `forest caterpillar` – a raw, extraordinary local delicacy which, if you are feeling brave, you can eat after lunch. A very beautiful walk with many amazing photo opportunities.

From Pergasingan to Obel-obel
This is the most attractive alternative trek we offer. This program requires two days and one night and involves a trek from Mount Pergasingan to the coast. Pergasingan is one of the steepest mountains around Sembalun, and requires physical and mental preparation. We will begin walking from Sembalun after breakfast at around 08.00am and break for lunch at Sempronan, a resting area three quarters the way up the mountain. After lunch we will continue our ascent for another two hours until we reach Dandulang, our campsite. After dinner you are welcome to join our guide, who will go to the stream to set the kodong (locally made fish trap). After a good night’s sleep, our guide will return to the stream to check the kodong, where hopefully there will be fish to accompany the rice at lunchtime. The walk from Pergasingan down to Obel-obel beach is challenging yet fascinating, Eight hours of descent to the coast will take us through thick rain forest, steep hills, grasslands and a large variety of local flora and fauna. A break for lunch will provide us with time to rest and eat the delicious fish caught by the kodong. After the long descent we will spend a few hours at the beach to soak up the beautiful views and smells of the sea before returning by car to Sembalun.

Soft Trek
This shorter trek will take only two hours of your time, and allows you to experience the village with a local perspective. We will explore Sembalun on foot, visiting to paddy fields, garlic plantations, local gardens and fields filled with a myriad of vegetables, fruit, and red and white rices. We will chat with farmers, giving you an opportunity to ask questions and maybe even practice your Indonesian skills. We will then continue to the ancient village of Desa Beleq – the original village of Sembalun. There you can examine the architecture of our ancestors and listen to local myths and tales. If you are lucky you might even hear the local Gamelan group playing! After Desa Beleq we will take a beautiful, cool walk through the neighboring bamboo garden to a local house where we will watch traditional hand weaving. There, our Mothers will happily teach you traditional weaving techniques. But we must be patient – they will explain the very complicated equipment until you can make one `tone` or two (it is sounds like music tones when the lady hits the tools). After experiencing the weaving process, you are welcome to purchase a sarong or small scarf as a gift for your family and friends back home. We will then return to base where you can relax from a very adventurous day!
